Sustainability Symposium Examines ‘Green’ Careers

The University of Scranton’s Fall Sustainability Symposium will examine diverse job opportunities available in the sustainable energy and business industries and includes an internship and career fair as well as a panel discussion about the broad range of disciplines with positions in this field. The event, which is free of charge and open to the public, will take place Tuesday, Nov. 11, in the DeNaples Center on campus.

The Sustainable Career and Internship Fair will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the McIlhenny Ballroom of the DeNaples Center. The panel discussion will begin at 7:30 p.m., also in the McIlhenny Ballroom.

At 7 p.m. in the McDonnell Room of the DeNaples Center, information about EnergyPath 2015 Scholarships will be provided. EnergyPath, sponsored by the Sustainable Energy Fund, is the region’s largest sustainable energy conference, which will take place at The University of Scranton July 20 to 24, 2015. EnergyPath Scholarships provide students with support for housing, food and admission to the energy camp, which is part of the conference.

John Costlow, president of the Sustainable Energy Fund, will provide an introduction to the panel discussion. Panelists are Janet Warnick, 1987 graduate of The University of Scranton and the northeast regional manager of the Office of Pollution Prevention and Energy Assistance for the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection; Amy Failings, representing Community Energy, Inc.; Barbara Giovagnoli, manager of Lackawanna County’s Office of Environmental Sustainability and recycling coordinator; and, from the University, Mark Murphy, director of sustainability; Leonard Champney, Ph.D., professor of political science, and student Maggie Capoochi, who participated in a geothermal energy research project during the summer.

The symposium is sponsored by the Sustainable Energy Fund and the University’s Office of Sustainability, Department of Physics and Electrical Engineering, Office of the Provost, Office of Career Services, College of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Office, Environmental Science Program, Environmental Studies Concentration, Committee on the Mission for Justice and the Sustainability Club.
